2) Backstreet Boys powerboat-racing team - Nick Carter, 22 yrs old heartthrob of pop music's Backstreet Boys, is getting into powerboat racing. Carter bought a 43-foot offshore hull with 2X750-horsepower engines and plans to run the 130 mph-boat in the APBA 2002 circuit in the United States and Canada. Actually, Carter will not be in the boat. His father, Bob Carter, will be the pilot and Lee Murray, (regarded for his aggressive racing tactics) will the throttle man in APBA's Super Vee class. Nick Carter Racing will debut April 28th in Daytona Beach, Fla. (original story from Assoc. Press)

2) Offshore Writer Sued: - According to the APBA web site, (http://www.apba-offshore.com/new/news.cfm?ID=108), 70-year-old John O. Crouse II, (he wrote the book "Sea Race" and was a writer for Powerboat magazine for many years) has made no secret of his displeasure with APBA Offshore Chairman Michael Allweiss over the past few years. Crouse's criticism has landed Crouse with a libel and defamation suit, filed on behalf of Allweiss and APBA Offshore. The suit accuses Crouse of disseminating false and scandalous information.

Crouse's Internet newsletter "Sea Talk" (http://www.searace-crouse.com/seatalk_column.htm) stated that Allweiss and/or APBA Offshore had "run up tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid bills stretching from New York to San Diego." Apparently, Crouse called Allweiss "Mr. Owe-it-all, a man who's been labeled a deadbeat from coast to coast by a wide assortment of people and organizations who've had the misfortune to do business with him," according to the suit. (Original Story From Terry Tomalin, Powerboat Magazine)

3) Spinelli Propellers closes - After three decades of making some of the best custom propellers in the business, Spinelli Bros. Inc. was expected to close its doors in December. The company's owners are retiring and plan to shut down the business or sell to a suitable buyer who will treat the customers well and carry on the legacy of Customer service. The Spinellis founded the shop when they couldn't find anyone to fix their own propellers. Eventually, they started making propellers for friends and the business steadily grew. The Rochester, N.Y. company was open only seven months a year, and has built about 500 props a year, each prop costing about $850.

4) Bombardier Inc (the old OMC) has been busy!

***** Bombardier announced the formation of a North American council of Evinrude and Johnson outboard dealers. They range from dealers serving walleye fishermen in Canada to those serving bass fishermen in Texas, and from dealers serving Pacific offshore boaters to those who outfit Atlantic billfishermen. The council will advise Bombardier on product issues with the intention of helping to ensure that their engines' performance, features and styling meet and exceed boaters' expectations. Sounds like a good idea!

***** Bombardier unveiled a new diagnostic tool that allows marine service technicians to use any hand-held personal data assistant (PDA) equipped with the 'Palm' operating system to analyse and adjust every engine function. The ED service tool can be used on Evinrude DI direct-injection outboard engines made since 1999, and offers 23 different diagnostic functions. ED functions retrieve information from the engine's electronic engine management module, ignition system and the oiling and fuel systems. Technicians can load ED onto their Palm 3.1, offering an advantage over a laptop PC, especially when conducting on-water testing because of its light and compact size

***** Bombardier announced a number of new partnerships during the Miami Boat Show. The company will provide engines to Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society. Evinrude engines have been named the official engine power to Wellcraft Marine's Team Wellcraft professional fishing team. In addition, the company has entered a long-term supply agreement with Triton Boats.

5) Mercury Marine is also busy!

**** Mercury Racing entered an agreement to produce All Star Engine (of Oshkosh, Wis) Co's 708 engine. The 708 is an aluminum block, fuel-injected V8 designed by All Star owner Steve Mugerauer. Mercury Racing president Fred Kiekhaefer said the 708 gives Mercury the opportunity to extend its application outside the marine industry. The 708 was originally targeted for the high-performance marine market, but Mercury Racing has plans to expand into commercial marine propulsion and non-marine applications, such as auto racing. Mercury Racing will manufacture the All Star 708 engines at its Fond du Lac, Wis., facility.

6) Wellcraft launches new VEC models - At the Miami Boat Show, Genmar launched two new Wellcraft models made with the virtual engineered composites (VEC) manufacturing process. The VEC process began first with Genmar's Larson brand two years ago, and now their Wellcraft division in Sarasota, Fla., will take advantage of the closed mold process. The two 2002 VEC models are Wellcraft's 190 and 210 Excalibur Sport boats. The VEC models promise greater durability and performance than traditionally built fiberglass boats.

7) Boating Innovation Awards at MIBC - The Miami International Boat Show included the presentation of industry innovation awards. Viking Yachts was recognized in the yacht category for its new Viking 105; in the cruise category, the award went to Solara 2200i; Bombardier Recreational products' Sea-Doo GTX 4-Tec was given the innovation award for the personal watercraft category with their innovative closed-loop cooling system, sound-reduction system, and an off-throttle steering system to improve safety; Zodiac of North America in the inflatables category for its 24-foot Medline III; Volvo Penta for its new XTD Composite Drive; and Dougherty Everglades in the fishing boat category.

****************************************

8) Boating Industry launches fight - Industry lobbyists are rallying opposition to a new congressional attempt to stiffen corporate average fuel economy regulations - a move the National Marine Manufacturers Association (www.nmma.org) says could hurt the boating industry. The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote next week on energy legislation that would impose new fuel mileage regulations on passenger automobiles and light trucks. The latter includes vehicles used to tow boats. NMMA says the CAFE proposal would force auto manufacturers to make smaller, less powerful vehicles that would be incapable of towing many recreational boats and could pose safety issues. The CAFE provision is included in majority leader Tom Daschle's energy bill, according to the NMMA. The NMMA (through their web page) is suggesting that people contact their representative to vote "no" on the provision.
